Letting children living in poverty go hungry is a new low

It's been an appalling sight to watch Conservative MPs refuse to feed children during the school holidays.

Faced with an injustice like this, we can't just stand idly by.

That's why my council, Portsmouth- and many other Lib Dem led councils - have been looking at what we can do to help where the Government has failed.

On Friday, I announced that we'd be providing vouchers that can be used to feed children to those who receive free school meals.

On the same day, Liberal Democrat colleagues in Kingston announced they'd be doing the same.

We're going to be making sure that up to 9,000 children won't be going hungry this half-term.

Council budgets have been run down by this Conservative government and we're facing some tough financial challenges. But faced with an injustice like this, we couldn't stand by and do nothing.

This is the difference that having Liberal Democrats running councils makes.

We know this Conservative Government rarely prioritises doing the right thing. But letting children living in poverty go hungry is a new low.
